Web and intake systems for family law firms

Family law intake is unlike other service intake in two ways: the enquiry often arrives in a crisis, and a meaningful share of enquiries must be turned away for conflicts or jurisdiction rather than converted. So the systems worth building are the ones that respond fast, gather enough to run a conflict check, and screen out what the firm cannot take — before a lawyer's hour is spent on it.

What usually goes wrong

  • Prospective clients call several firms in one sitting and retain whichever responds first, so a next-day callback usually loses
  • Attorney hours go into consultations that were never viable — wrong jurisdiction, conflict, no ability to pay
  • Enquiries arrive at night and on weekends, which is when domestic situations escalate
  • Intake information is retyped between the first call, the intake form, and the case management system
  • Confidentiality and advertising rules make careless automation a professional-conduct risk, not just a bad look

What pays for itself first

Ranked by how quickly it returns the build cost in this specific trade, not by what is most impressive to demo.

01

Fast-response intake qualification

A voice and web intake path that responds immediately, captures jurisdiction, matter type, opposing party name, and urgency, and books a consultation or routes the enquiry out — while flagging anything needing a conflict check before contact goes further.

Why it pays: In a market where prospective clients contact several firms in the same hour, response latency is the single largest controllable factor in who gets retained. Capturing the opposing party early also stops conflict problems being discovered after a consultation.

02

Consultation scheduling and preparation

Confirmed scheduling with the intake summary and document checklist delivered to both sides, so the consultation starts with the facts already gathered.

Why it pays: A prepared consultation converts better and wastes less of the most expensive hour in the firm. It also reduces no-shows, which in family law are common because circumstances change fast.

03

Content that answers the questions people actually search

Substantive pages on process, timelines, and cost structure in your jurisdiction — the questions prospective clients search at 2am — written to be citable by AI answer engines rather than stuffed with keywords.

Why it pays: Family law queries are overwhelmingly informational before they are transactional. A firm that answers the process question earns the enquiry; AI engines also preferentially cite clear, specific, well-structured explanations.

The constraint we design around

Legal advertising and confidentiality rules bind this vertical hard, and they vary by state and province. Nothing automated may give legal advice or imply a solicitor-client relationship; disclaimers and non-engagement language have to be present and correct; conflict checks must happen before substantive contact; and intake data is confidential from the first message, which rules out casual handling of it in third-party tools. ⚠ We build to these constraints but your firm's bar rules govern — your own compliance review is required before launch, not after.

Questions from family law owners

Can an AI intake system give legal advice?

No, and it must be built so it cannot. It gathers facts, explains process in general terms, and books time with a lawyer. Anything that would constitute advice on a specific matter is escalated. The system also has to state plainly that contact does not create a solicitor-client relationship, which is both a bar requirement in most jurisdictions and simply accurate.

How do you handle conflict checks?

Intake captures the opposing party's name early and checks it against your existing matters before the enquiry progresses to substantive contact. Where a potential conflict is flagged, the enquiry stops and routes to a human to review. Automating this order of operations is one of the more valuable parts of the build, because discovering a conflict after a consultation is the expensive outcome.

Is an AI answering service appropriate for someone in a domestic crisis?

Not on its own. Distress and safety-related calls need a human and a clear route to emergency services, and we design that route before anything else. The defensible use is speed of response and after-hours coverage for enquiries that would otherwise reach voicemail — with an immediate human path for anything urgent. If your firm decides a person should take every call, that is a reasonable position and we would build only the web intake side.
